As a wife and mother, who works outside of the home; who is also very involved in my local church and community, life can get pretty hectic! I have seasons where everything seems to be ticking along quite nicely, and then all of a sudden, the plates I’m spinning seem to come crashing down around me.
It’s at these times that I head back to a passage in the Bible that I use as a Blueprint for my life in order to gain work-life balance, and it’s often the area of creativity that I find I need to address first.
In Proverbs 31:10-31 the Bible describes a wife/mother/business woman who almost seems too good to be true. She’s so perfect, that I’ve even heard preachers suggest that it can’t possibly all be about one woman, it must be good bits of several women. However I struggle to believe that God would put something in the Bible unless it was relevant then, and still relevant now, for us to learn from. As I looked again at this woman, I saw how the different elements of her life combined to create a blueprint for me to live a fullilling and balanced life.
I have 2 friends who are amazing seamstresses. They love nothing more than searching through fabric shops and discovering different materials. As soon as they’ve made a purchase they are eager to work with it and turn it into something new.
I’ve seen the same passion in my friend who loves to organise. She’ll happy flick through a stationary catalogue, imaging what she can create with these very different materials. Her passion is to create calm out of chaos by using systems and stationary. However, when the stationary order comes through, she has just the same passion to get started on the latest project.
We are made in the image of a very creative God. Even within something as mundane as grass, God has made a great variety. Our own creativity may look very different to the other people around us but it’s an integral part of who we are and something we need to give expression to.
So often when my work-life balance has got out of control it’s because I haven’t got a creative project on the go. I’ve let myself get so caught up with my To Do list and commitments, that I haven’t taken the time to find a new project. I haven’t taken the time to dream up new ideas and find an expression for my creativity.
The woman in Proverbs 31 “makes tapestries for herself” (verse 22) and I believe when we take the time to do something creative for ourselves we can live a more balanced life.
